COURSE: ARCH 562 (Propositions) WINTER 2022
PROFESSOR: Adam Miller
PROGRAMS/ TOOLS USED: a mix of hand and machine sewing, ironing, and hammering
PROJECT SUMMARY:
We were asked to select a domestic object that we had some attachment to or felt strong feelings towards and create clothing for it. The clothing should challenge the object's form, be based on two aesthetics of our choosing, and use found materials. This is one of three projects we will be completing for this studio course.

DESIGN VARIABLES:
- DOMESTIC OBJECT: box grater
- AESTHETIC I: BDSM (Bondage, Discipline, Dominance and Submission, Sadomasochism)
- AESTHETIC II: Trad Girl
- BASE MATERIALS: pink polyester satin, tulle, vinyl

MEME:
We were asked to create a meme that illustrated our aesthetics. Although the lady on the left is typically identified as Goth Girl, I thought she also fit the BDSM aesthetic well. I thought the image of the two girls sharing music illustrated how the two aesthetics would blend and work well together.
DEFINITIONS:
- BDSM: Is the abbreviation of . . . bondage, discipline (or domination), sadism, and masochism (webmd and Websters). It is typically a sexual
activity involving such practices as the use of physical restraints, the granting and relinquishing of control, and the infliction of pain. It refers
to a range of sexual preferences that generally relate to the enjoyment of physical control, psychological control, and/or pain. It can be
broken down into six overarching components (bondage, discipline, dominance or submission, sadomasochism).
- TRAD GIRL: Short for "traditional wife" (that is to say, a female homemaker)

Embodies traditional feminine or wifely characteristics
DIAGRAMS:
We were asked to create three diagrams. The first examined the function and uses of the domestic object we had selected, an item of clothing, and three materials we would be using for the project. In the second diagram we explored the meaning and associations of the domestic object and the two aesthetics of our choosing. The third diagram asked us to examine the materials of the domestic object, item of clothing, and the three materials.
I focused on the following terms and phrases.

- to embody traditional feminine and wifely characteristics
- to restrict
- to cause pain and be painful
- to be synthetic

DESIGN EVOLUTION:
Beginning from the very left I started with a box grater I had purchased from Target some time ago. It was one of the first items my partner and I had purchased together. I had asked my partner to purchase a cheese (wired) slicer, but instead he purchased a grater instead as he only ever eats grated cheese, whereas I had only ever eaten my cheese sliced. Cheese has been a big part of our lives, but in different forms.
This was my first draft of the clothing, here I was very interested in the idea of giving and receiving pain. I covered the handle in faux gems so the holder would be in pain while also doling it out to others via the grating holes or the chains with faux gems attached dangling from the bottom.
In the final form I was also interested in pain, however, now I was also interested in creating pain for the object. The nails that pierce all layers of the clothing and the vinyl corset tied tightly squeeze the layer of overstuffed satin beneath (creating a muffin top like effect) make it look as though the object is in pain. The nails and the spikes protruding from the top and bottom also make the object look ask though it has the potential to cause pain. The four spikes protruding from the bottom consist of knitting needles covered by vinyl and stuffing. When they fall out, the mask falls, and one realizes that it is all a charade.

PATTERNS:
The above were the patterns that acted as a guide for cutting and sewing (with a machine) the satin and tulle fabric. They also helped shape the vinyl pieces for the corset.

DRAWINGS:
We were asked to produce and print drawings of 11" x 17" size. I opted to include top and side sections to help illustrate the layers and how the more delicate layers made of satin and tulle are on the inside (like insulation) while the firmer layers such as the vinyl corset are on the outside and the nails keep all of the layers together. All of the drawings are also cut off painfully to creating harm to the object in the form of a drawing.
