COURSE: ARCH 703 (Material Engagement) & ARCH 600 (Independent Study) - FALL 2022/ WINTER 2023
PROFESSOR: Catie Newell and Glenn Wilcox
TOOLS/ MATERIALS: Ender 3 Pro 3D Printer, PLA filament,
PROGRAMS USED: Rhino
PROJECT SUMMARY:
We were asked to select two atmospheric conditions and create something that brought these two atmospheric conditions to life indoors. We were strongly encouraged to experiment with and investigate materials. I chose to explore the potential of konjac sponges. Konjac is a popular food in Asia often consumed as noodles, in nabe, and fruit flavored snacks. When frozen and thawed several times it create a sponge that many use to wash their faces or infants due to its soft texture and antibacterial properties. The sponges loose roughly 75% of their weight/ volume when dried completely and become incredibly stiff. I am currently exploring the potential to use dried konjac sponges as furniture
