COURSE: ARCH 571 (Advanced Digital Fabrications) FALL 2022
PROFESSOR: Glenn Wilcox
PROGRAMS/ TOOLS USED: MasterCam, 3 axis CNC machine (bits), clamps, and hand saw
PROJECT SUMMARY: “The stool is the most fundamental and elemental tool for sitting. Essentially a chair without a back – its simplicity, everyday-ness and ubiquity offers up an interesting challenge for a designer. When doing ‘something’ with so little, attention to material, detail, line, and form become essential. Where do we situate the ‘useless’ (i.e. the design) in such a utilitarian object? To what do we attribute its effectual ‘value?’ To a certain degree what you do will be influenced and dictated by your primary tool – the 3 axis CNC. Is the ‘digital’ nature of the project masked or celebrated?”
Toof was created to be a function, fun, and materially efficient stool. The design allows users to store items such as a water bottle and purse or backpack. Also unlike tradiational chairs in school that are solid plastic, this stool allows your bottom to breath, avoiding that uncomfortable feeling of when one’s skin gets stuck to a chair on a humid summer day.
